Fortified gate: by order of 8 October 1925
Origin and history
Varen's fortified gate is a stone building built in 1621, in a context marked by the religious wars that were raging the region. It was part of the fortifications of the town of Varen, Tarn-et-Garonne, and was a strategic defence point. The door consists of a square tower with mâchicoulis, with an external entrance in full arch. A rare architectural peculiarity lies in its barbacan-shaped forebody, positioned in point and defended by three murderers and a drawbridge protecting a second inner door.
Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 8 October 1925, this gate is the last remaining of the fortifications of Varen. A commemorative plaque over the outer door indicates the date of construction of 1621. The bay cover, redone in 1616, suggests previous work or redevelopments related to an adjacent entrance work. Today owned by the municipality, it illustrates the evolution of defensive systems between the 15th and 17th centuries, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance adaptations.
Available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, highlight its role in local history, as well as its architectural rarity. The gate is located on Rue de la République, at approximately 5612 Place de la Fontaine, and its location is considered satisfactory (note 7/10). It remains a material testimony of the religious tensions and defensive needs of the modern era in Occitanie.
