Origin and history

Porte François I, also known as Porte Neuve, is a medieval town gate located in Cremieu, Isère department. It was pierced in 1535 under an existing tower of the fortified enclosure, then inaugurated in 1536 during a passage by King Francis I. This new opening aimed to refocus the western access to the city, previously served by the nearby Quirieu Gate. The door is part of a wider defensive system, originally composed of 9 doors and 14 watch towers protecting the city.

The structure combines traditional medieval elements and adaptations related to nascent artillery. The tower, built of limestone, is surmounted by a lauze roof and equipped with mâchicoulis and a round road, typical of the fortifications of the Middle Ages. A gunboat, pierced at half height, testifies to the adaptation to modern wars using powder. The door itself is not centered in the axis of the tower, but slightly shifted, a notable architectural feature.

Filed under the title of historical monuments by order of 11 September 1906, the Porte François I is now owned by the commune of Crémieu. Its current location, on the Boulevard de la Porte Neuve, marks the ancient eastern limit of the medieval city. The monument thus illustrates the transition between medieval defence techniques and Renaissance innovations, in a context where Crémieu played a strategic role in Dauphiné.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, confirm its status as an emblematic monument to local heritage. The gate is located at 13 boulevard de la Porte Neuve, in an area where localization accuracy is estimated to be fair (level 5/10). No information is provided on its current accessibility to the public or possible tourist functions (visits, rentals).
