Origin and history
The Porte Malbousquet, originally named Porte Gambin, is a military building located in the town of Toulon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Built in 1870, it is part of the 19th century urban fortifications, a period marked by geopolitical tensions and technical advances in the art of war. Its architecture includes typical defensive elements, such as guard corps, a court and two bastions, reflecting the strategic concerns of the time.
The gate, with its associated structures, was listed as historical monuments by order of 19 September 1989. This official recognition underlines its heritage and architectural importance, as well as its role in the urban history of Toulon. The Var department, where it is located, experienced an increasing industrialization in the 19th century, particularly in connection with the Toulon maritime arsenal, which explains the importance of military infrastructure in the region.
Today, the Malbousquet Gate testifies to the evolution of the defence systems and the city planning of Toulouse. Although information on its current vocation (visit, public use) is missing from the sources, its inscription in the historical heritage guarantees its preservation. It is part of a wider set of protected monuments in Toulon, illustrating the richness of Provencal military heritage.
