Origin and history

The Porte Roland de Montigny-le-Gannelon is a gate probably dating from the 12th or early 13th century. Its architectural features, such as the modillon cornice and the profile of the foothills, allow to situate its construction in this period. The ground around the door has been severely lowered over time, which now alters its initial perception.

This door was part of a defensive system, as indicated by the still visible provisions for its closure. It bears witness to the strategic importance of the place in medieval times. Its registration as a Historic Monument by order of 3 February 1928 underlines its heritage value.

Today, La Porte Roland is owned by the commune of Montigny-le-Gannelon, in the department of Eure-et-Loir (28), in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Although its state of conservation and accessibility are not specified, it remains a remarkable vestige of local medieval military architecture.
