Origin and history

The Porte Saint-Jean de Joigny is an emblematic medieval building located in the town of Joigny, in the department of l'Yonne, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built in the 13th century, it is one of the remains of the fortifications that once protected the city. Its architecture reflects the defensive techniques of the time, with characteristic elements of fortified urban doors.

The Saint John Gate, accompanied by the adjoining ramparts, was classified as historical monuments by an order of 5 December 1941. This classification reflects its heritage importance and the desire to preserve this vestige of the medieval past of Joigny. Today, it remains a symbol of the region's urban and military history.
