Origin and history

La Porte Saint-Jean is a 13th-century medieval building located in Château-Thierry, in the department of Aisne. It was the main entrance to the city's castle and is one of the remains of the fortified enclosure that once protected the city. Its architecture reflects the defensive techniques of the time, with a structure adapted to protection against local invasions or conflicts.

Ranked under the title of historical monuments by order of 22 October 1921, the Saint John Gate bears witness to the strategic importance of Château-Thierry in the Middle Ages. Today it is owned by the commune and represents a major architectural heritage of the Hauts-de-France region. Its classification allowed its preservation, despite urban transformations that affected other parts of the enclosure or adjacent buildings, such as the demolition of a turret and porch in the 19th century.

The monument is associated with a hotel of the 3rd quarter of the 16th century, bearing the date 1559, which could correspond to its construction or remodelling. This hotel is notable for being the birthplace of Jean de La Fontaine in 1621. Although the Saint John Gate itself is not directly related to this event, this historical context enriches the local heritage. The city acquired the hotel in 1868 to make it a museum, thus contributing to the cultural development of this area.
