Porte Saint-Pierre, including the rest of the adjoining rampart (Box F 272): inscription by order of 28 December 1984

Origin and history

The Porte Saint-Pierre is a medieval building located in the commune of Reillanne, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. Built between the second half of the 13th century and the first half of the 14th century, it is part of the remains of the fortifications of the city. Its architecture reflects the defence techniques of this period, typical of provençal villages.

The gate was registered as historic monuments by order of 28 December 1984. This protection also includes the remains of the adjacent rampart, emphasizing the heritage importance of the whole. It is located precisely at 5146 Peyrouret, in the centre of Reillanne, and remains a testimony to the medieval history of the region.

At the time of its construction, Reillanne, like many Provencal villages, was a place of passage and exchange, protected by ramparts to prevent local conflicts or looting. Fortified doors, such as the Saint Peter Gate, played a key role in regulating entrances and exits, while symbolizing the power and prosperity of the community. These structures were often integrated into a wider defensive system, including enclosure walls and watch towers.
