Portes de Ville : inscription by decree of 5 November 1927

Origin and history

The Portes de Ville de Bonneval is a medieval monument located in the department of Eure-et-Loir, in the Centre-Val de Loire region. This fortified vestige, typical of the urban enclosures of the Middle Ages, bears witness to the strategic importance of the city at that time. Their presence reflects the need for protection and access control in a period of conflict and insecurity.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 5 November 1927, these gates are now owned by the municipality of Bonneval. Their listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory highlights their heritage and architectural value. Although their exact location is approximate (noted 5/10 in precision), they remain a point of interest for local history, as evidenced by data from the Merimée database and photographic contributions under Creative Commons license.

In medieval times, city gates played a central role in everyday life: they regulated the entrances and exits of people and goods, while symbolizing municipal power. In a region such as the Centre-Val de Loire, marked by agriculture, crafts and trade, these fortified works were also places of tax collection and supervision. Their preservation now allows us to evoke this past and the social organization of the cities then.
