Origin and history
Valençay station, built in the early 20th century, is a remarkable example of neo-Renaissance railway architecture, designed by Parisian architect Félix Houssin. Its style was inspired by the nearby castle, owned by the Prince of Talleyrand, and its construction was partially financed by the Duke of Valençay, descendant of the diplomat. The station was inaugurated on 6 October 1902 with the opening of the line between Romorantin and Écueillé, integrating the Blanc-Argent network.
The building, richly decorated with sculptures and a zinc frieze, includes a stone-framed clock and a marble engraved plan of line. Art Nouveau lanterns complete its aesthetic. The station also includes a freight hall, a machine shed and a hydraulic tank. These elements, as well as technical routes and equipment, were listed as historical monuments on 18 January 1993.
After a period of decline, marked by the partial closure of the line in 2009 due to its old state, the station underwent a renewal. The SABA association has restored the way between Valençay and Luçay-le-Mâle, allowing the reopening in 2019. Since 2022, a bicycle service, inaugurated on 4 August, boosts tourist traffic, complementing the rail offer operated by the Compagnie du Blanc-Argent.
Today, Valençay station remains a central point of the TER Centre-Val de Loire network, served by trains from Salbris and Romorantin. It combines historical heritage and modern activities, such as the bicycle, while maintaining its role as an intermodal hub with bus connections and parking spaces for visitors.
