Origin and history

Le Relais de poste, known as Hôtel du Croissant, is a building located in Beaumont-sur-Oise, Val-d'Oise, Île-de-France. Built in the 16th and 17th centuries, it is distinguished by its stone structure and bellstone, as well as by an imposing staircase tower with a corbelled turret. One of its most remarkable features is an armorized lintel with stars and a crescent, which inspired the name of the building and the adjacent street.

The facades and roofs of the Hotel du Croissant, as well as the armored window, were inscribed as historical monuments by order of 21 December 1984. This building, owned by the municipality, is located at 2 rue Basse-de-la-Vallée. Although its precise history remains partially documented, its architecture reflects the importance of post relays in organizing travel and exchanges in modern and classical times.

At this time, Beaumont-sur-Oise, like many cities in the Paris region, was a strategic crossing point for travellers and merchants. Post relays played a key role in transport logistics, offering lodging and changing horses. These infrastructures were often built or maintained by wealthy bourgeois or aristocratic families, as suggested by the quality of materials and ornaments of the Hotel du Croissant. Their presence reflects the economic and social activity of the region, marked by trade, official travel and the development of road networks under the Ancien Régime.
