Origin and history
Le Poste forestière de Sainte-Perine is a former medieval hamlet located in Saint-Jean-aux-Bois, in the department of l'Oise (Hauts-de-France). Originally, the site housed a chapel built in 1152 by Queen Adelaide, wife of Louis VI the Gros. This place of worship marked the beginning of a lasting religious occupation, with the installation of a priory in the 13th century, successively occupied by Benedictine and Augustine congregations until the 17th century, when the nuns finally left the place.
In the 19th century, the site was converted into a forest station in 1826, dedicated to the management and monitoring of the forest of Compiègne. Ranked a historic monument in 1905, it now preserves Gothic remains, including the choir of the ancient church, adorned with a diamond-pointed moulding and a modillon cornice. Part of the estate now belongs to the National Forest Office (NFB), combining administrative and heritage functions.
The current architecture thus combines medieval heritage and contemporary utility, with a guardhouse and a meeting room integrated into the site. The pond of Sainte-Périne, adjacent to the post, recalls the old spiritual and agricultural vocation of the place, now inscribed in the protected forest landscape of the Hauts-de-France.
