Poterno de Saint-Lô

    Rue de la poterne
    50000 Saint-Lô

Origin and history

The Poterne de Saint-Lô is a historic monument located in the city of Saint-Lô, Normandy. This monument, whose exact period of construction is not specified, is a poterno, i.e. a fortified secondary gate, often integrated into city walls or defensive systems. It is located at the intersection of Rue de la Poterne and Place des Beaux-Regards, in the department of La Manche.

Poternes played a strategic role in medieval or fortified cities, allowing discreet or secondary access while strengthening defence. In Saint-Lô, as in many Norman cities, these structures were essential for controlling the flow of people and goods, while protecting the population from invasions or conflicts. Their presence often bears witness to an urban organisation marked by defensive concerns, typical of periods of tension or frequent wars in Europe.
