Origin and history

Hotel Poulain is an iconic mansion located in Quintin, in the Côtes-d'Armor department, Brittany. Built in the 17th century, it illustrates the architectural features of the late 16th and early 17th century in this region. The building is distinguished by its three-stitched coyal roof, its successively enlarged floors, and its exposed beams supported by consoles. A human figure adorns the angle of the house, under the beams of the first floor, adding a remarkable decorative touch.

The monument is located in 6 Place 1830 and 13 rue au Lait, in a district that has developed outside the walls of Quintin, notably towards the suburbs of Saint-Thurian and the heights of Saint-Yves. The city, located on a promontory between two valleys, saw the building of several 16th and 17th century houses, including Hotel Poulain, which bears witness to the urban expansion of this period.

Ranked as historical monuments since December 21, 1977, the Poulain Hotel is now owned by the municipality of Quintin. Protected elements include facades and roofs, as specified in the classification order. This monument offers a representative example of Breton civil architecture of its time, mixing functionality and ornaments.

The location of the Hotel Poulain is estimated with a priori satisfactory accuracy (level 6 of 10), and it is referenced in the Mérimée and Inventoire Bretagne bases. Although the information on its current accessibility (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its status as a historic monument makes it a place of major heritage interest for the region.

The figure of Jean-François-Pierre Poulain de Corbion, mentioned in connection with this monument, suggests a possible historical connection with a local personality, although the details of this association are not explicitly developed in the available sources.

Finally, the architecture of the Hotel Poulain, with its structural and decorative specificities, reflects the know-how of the Breton craftsmen of the time. The exposed beams, the consoles and the human sculpture at the corner of the building underline the attention paid to both solidity and aesthetics, characteristic of the urban constructions of this period in Brittany.
