Origin and history

The Presbytery of Chemiré-sur-Sarthe is a 16th-century religious building in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the commune of Chemiré-sur-Sarthe, now attached to Morannes on Sarthe-Daumeray. This monument, typical of the presbyteries of the time, reflects the rural ecclesiastical organization of the region, marked by sober and functional architecture.

The building was listed as historic monuments on 21 December 1977, a recognition that protects its facades, roofs and stairways from its tower. This protection is part of a desire to preserve the architectural heritage of Angelvin, often linked to the religious and community history of the villages.

In the 16th century, the presbyteries played a central role in local life, serving both as a residence for the parish priest and as a place to manage parish affairs. In the Pays de la Loire, a region marked by a strong agricultural and artisanal presence, these buildings symbolized the spiritual and social authority of the Church in predominantly rural communities.

Today, the Presbytery of Chemiré-sur-Sarthe remains a testimony of that time, although its current use (visit, rental or other) is not specified in the available sources. Its architecture and history make it an important part of Maine-et-Loire's heritage.
