Facades and roofs (Case AR 126): inscription by order of 15 December 1972
Origin and history
The presbytery of Montreuil-Bellay is a religious monument located in the town of Maine-et-Loire, in the heart of the Pays de la Loire. Its architectural history extends from the second half of the 15th century for its oldest parts (such as the portal and part of the main work), until major expansions in the 17th century and interior reshuffles in the 18th century. Troglodytic communes, typical of the region, were also developed, while the street façade was modified in the 20th century.
The building has been protected since 15 December 1972, when its facades and roofs were listed as historical monuments. This recognition highlights its heritage interest, mixing medieval heritage, classical transformations and modern adaptations. The presbytery is part of the architectural landscape of Angelvin, marked by the use of tuffle stone and troglodytic networks, reflecting local constructive practices throughout the centuries.
The location of the presbytery, at 2 avenue Paul-Painlevé, makes it a central part of the Montreuil-Bellay heritage, a city known for its castle and its history linked to Anjou. Its state of conservation and its successive adaptations reflect changes in religious and community needs, from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era.
