Origin and history
Villersexel Presbytery is a religious building built around 1753, south of the old town centre. Although its external volume was preserved, its original interior decor disappeared during renovations carried out in the late nineteenth century. This building illustrates the civil architecture linked to the ecclesiastical institutions of the Old Regime, typical of the rural towns of Franche-Comté.
The presbytery has been a part of historic monuments since 1996, especially for its facades, roofs and terraced garden bounded by a retaining wall. The latter could be a re-use of the remains of the medieval wall of the town, thus testifying to the urban evolution of Villersexel. The site is now owned by the municipality and retains a heritage value linked to its local and religious history.
Located at 24 Rue du Presbytère, the building integrates into an architectural landscape marked by its past role as a dwelling for the parish clergy. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments underlines its importance in the built heritage of the Haute-Saône, a region where the ancient presbyteries are often markers of the social and religious organization before the Revolution.
