Origin and history

The prestrière de Moineaux, located in Barjouville en Eure-et-Loir, is a rare vestige of the 16th century. This monument was originally the portal of the ancient priest of the cathedral chapter of Chartres, whose essential structure has now disappeared. The preserved elements include the arch sill, part of the cut stone vault, and a rubble stabilization wall. A circular brick scald, overlooking the corner, and a cul-de-lamp carved of lions and putti testify to the artistic know-how of the time.

The architecture of the prestrière illustrates a remarkable technical mastery, especially in the transition between a rectangular base and a circular construction. The balance of composition, organised around a central axis, highlights sculptural details such as lions and stone putti. These remains, though fragmentary, offer an overview of the importance of the buildings related to the cathedral chapters in the region in the sixteenth century.

Ranked Historic Monument by order of 27 June 1994, the site includes cadastral remains (park A 352). The current location, near Morancez, remains approximate, with a map accuracy considered poor (note 5/10). This gate, although isolated, recalls the role of the priests in the religious and administrative organization of Chartres and its surroundings in the Renaissance.
