Origin and history

The Priory of Rosey is a religious monument whose origins date back to at least 1090, when its possession was confirmed at Saint Paul Abbey in Besançon. This site, originally linked to medieval monastic life, was then ceded in 1588 to the Dominicans and transferred in 1722 to the Saint-Jacques Hospital in Besançon. These changes of ownership reflect its importance in the regional religious and charitable network.

The current buildings, mostly rebuilt around 1750, are organized around a once closed courtyard. The house body, partly dating from the 15th or 16th century, was transformed in the 18th century, while the chapel, vaulted with ridges, illustrates the religious architecture of the period. After the Revolution, the site was adapted to modern agricultural needs, with modifications such as the widening of the barn and the progressive demolition of stone fences.

Ranked a historic monument in 2008, the priory retains remarkable elements such as ground bays, a medieval fireplace, and a full-line window. These remains bear witness to its architectural evolution, between medieval heritage and the transformations of the Enlightenment. Today, the chapel and the house, fully protected, recall its central role in local history, between monastic life, hospital assistance and adaptation to socio-economic change.

Located at 7 rue de Mailley in Rosey (Haute-Saône), the priory was administratively dependent on the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Its present state, although marked by post-revolutionary changes, offers an overview of the architectural and social dynamics that shaped this territory over nearly seven centuries.
