Origin and history

The Priory Saint-Andéol de Claveyson, located in the Drôme department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, is a Romanesque church founded in the 12th century. Its semi-circular bedside in cut stone, typical of Romanesque art, is the only vestige of this period. The western façade, dated from the late 15th century, features a flamboyant Gothic portal with great precision, reflecting later architectural developments. The priory, mentioned from the Middle Ages in the cartular of Grenoble, was attached to the abbey of Cluny and depended on the diocese of Vienna from 1458.

The site, occupied from an earlier era as attests to the cartular, followed the Benedictine rule under the authority of Clunisian monks. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1984, the priory today illustrates a composite religious heritage, mixing Romanesque and Gothic influences. Its apse and portal reflect the stylistic transitions between the 12th and 16th centuries, while its monastic history remains linked to the clunisian order and the diocese of Vienna.

The building, owned by the commune of Claveyson, stands in the eponymous hamlet of Saint-Andéol. Its classification in 1984 preserved remarkable elements such as the roman bedside and the flamboyant portal. Although partially transformed over the centuries, the priory retains a major heritage value, attested by its presence in the Mérimée bases and observatories of religious heritage.
