Origin and history
The Priory of Xanton-Chassenon, located in the Vendée department, is a religious monument dating back to the fourteenth century. It depended on the Abbey of Maillezais, which was founded by Guillaume V the Grand, Duke of Aquitaine. This priory illustrates medieval monastic architecture, with elements such as a porch dating from 1010 and a vaulted pantry of 14th century warheads.
The vaulted cellars, including the remains of a staircase, are the most remarkable parts of the site. They were listed as historic monuments in 2005, highlighting their heritage value. The priory reflects the importance of abbeys and priories in the religious and social organization of the region during the Middle Ages, particularly under the influence of the Benedictine order.
The former cellar, composed of two vaulted spans, is located under a modern-day building. This architectural contrast reflects the transformations of the site over the centuries. The priory, now owned by the commune, retains traces of its monastic past, while being part of the historical landscape of the Vendée, rich in medieval religious monuments.
