Origin and history
The Prieuré de Grane is a religious building built between the 11th and 12th centuries, located in the commune of Grane, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This monument, whose chapel has been protected since 1926, illustrates the importance of monastic establishments in structuring rural territories in the Middle Ages. Its architecture and location reflect the religious and social practices of the time, marked by the influence of monastic orders in the region.
At that time, Drôme, then integrated into the Holy Roman Empire and then into the Kingdom of France, saw the development of networks of priories and abbeys. These institutions play a central role in local life, combining spiritual, economic and agricultural functions. They serve as places of prayer, as well as centres for production and redistribution of resources, while participating in the supervision of rural populations. The Priory of Grane fits in this context, although the available sources do not specify his order of membership or its founders.
The chapel of the Priory was listed as a Historic Monument by decree of 13 July 1926, highlighting its heritage value. Today, the site seems to be partially accessible, although practical information on current visits or uses (rent, accommodation) is not detailed in the sources consulted. Its location, noted as "a priori satisfactory", allows to situate it approximately at 5405 Le Prieuré, in the commune of Grane.
