Chapel: inscription by order of 23 October 1945

Origin and history

Le Prieuré du Châtelet is a religious building located in Chambles, in the Loire department (42), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Dating from the 12th century, this monument illustrates medieval architecture of the period, with a chapel that constitutes the element protected by the Historical Monuments. Its official registration by order of 23 October 1945 bears witness to its heritage importance.

The location of the Priory, at 1165 Chemin du Châtelet and Joannade, is estimated with an accuracy considered fair (note 5/10). This site, now owned by a public institution, could have played a spiritual and community role for the inhabitants of Chambles and the surrounding area. Priories, often linked to monastic orders, served as religious, economic and sometimes educational centres for local populations.

Available sources, including Monumentum, indicate that the Priory of the Châtelet is a Historical Monument, but do not specify its current state (open or closed to visit, contemporary use). The chapel, the central element of the site, remains the only component explicitly protected by heritage legislation. No information is provided on any historical characters associated with this place.
