Origin and history

The priory of Saint-André de Mirebeau, an outbuilding of the Bourgueil Abbey attested since 1102, was founded between 1051 and 1055. The monks abandoned him at the beginning of the seventeenth century. The site includes a church rebuilt between 1860 and 1869, as well as an eastern wing housing a 13th century capitular hall, characteristic of medieval monastic architecture. The house, with a semi-out-of-work stair tower and monumental chimneys, reflects influences from the 13th, 15th and 19th centuries.

The capitular hall, rectangular, is a major vestige of the 13th century, while the present church, built in the 19th century, presents a vaulting system in line with domes. The bell tower, built in 1860 by architect Dulin, completes this architectural ensemble. The priory, which was partially listed as historical monuments in 1926 and then in total in 2003, illustrates the evolution of a religious site over nearly nine centuries.

Mirebeau, located in Vienna in New Aquitaine, was a strategic town in the Middle Ages, marked by conflicts between Counts of Anjou and Poitou. The priory Saint-André, founded in this feudal context, bears witness to the religious and political importance of the region. Its history is linked to that of Bourgueil Abbey, of which it was an addiction, and to Benedictine monastic life that structured local life.

In the 19th century, the reconstruction of the church and the addition of the bell tower by architect Dulin marked a phase of renovation, reflecting the cultural and aesthetic needs of the era. The priory, now owned by the municipality, preserves remarkable architectural elements, such as the 15th century stalls and a 12th century painted wooden Virgin Child, testimonies of its rich past.

The site, open to the visit, allows to discover a religious and historical heritage, anchored in the landscape of the Haut-Poitou. Its inscription in historic monuments highlights its heritage value, while providing an overview of the architectural and social evolution of the region since the Middle Ages.

Future

The priory Saint André is today a cultural space available for rent and hosts various events each year.
