Origin and history

Priory Saint-Benoît de Saint-Benoît-du-Sault was established between 974 and 975 on a rocky spur overlooking the Portfolio Valley. Founded as an outbuilding of the abbey of Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire, it served as an advanced bastion for its possessions in Aquitaine, on the border of Berry and Limousin. The present church, built around 1020-1030, marks the culmination of its medieval architectural development. The site, designated as provost until the Revolution, combined spiritual and seigneurial power, with a provost representing the Abbé de Fleury and a prior managing monastic life.

The monastic buildings, organized south of the church, reflect a functional duality: the regular places (reconstructed by the Maurists between 1735 and 1742) grouped around the cloister, and the buildings of the provost, of the medieval appearance heteroclite. The Eastern wing, sober and characteristic of the 18th century Maurist architecture, illustrates Benedictine reform. Since the middle of the 18th century, the whole — regular places and pre-vot house — has remained unchanged, testifying to the key stages in the history of the Benedictines of Saint-Maur.

Ranked Historic Monument in 2011, the priory includes the church, the convent buildings, the courtyards, the terraces and the old access road called the Gabion. Property shared between the municipality and the private sector, it retains a strategic location, although its cartographic accuracy is considered fair (note 5/10). Its historical role, both religious and seigneurial, makes it a remarkable example of the monastic heritage between the Middle Ages and modern times.
