Origin and history
The Priory Saint-Étienne des Alix, located in Rocamadour in the Lot, is one of the most important barns in the Abbey of Obazine in Quercy. This historic monument consists of a set of buildings organised around a fortified enclosure, punctuated with towers. The large, partly medieval house body preserves an old room and a truncated tower, while the chapel, with a unique nave, has a broken cradle vault. These elements testify to his agricultural and religious role in the Middle Ages, linked to the monastic order of Obazine.
The house known as the Presbyterus illustrates the evolution of the site: its medieval nucleus was enlarged and remodelled in the 18th century, reflecting architectural adaptations over the centuries. Together, including the house, the enclosure towers, the chapel and the former presbytery, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 14 April 1994. Approximate location (5391 Les Alix) and poor mapping accuracy (level 5/10) highlight the challenges of its preservation and enhancement.
Originally, this monastic barn served as a production and storage centre for the Abbey of Obazine, integrated into a wider economic and spiritual network. The buildings, combining agricultural, defensive and religious functions, embody the medieval organisation of monastic estates in Occitanie. Their transformation in the 18th century marked a transition to more residential or community uses, as evidenced by the remodeled presbytery.
Today, the site asks about its accessibility and its vocation: practical information is lacking, but its registration under the title of Historical Monuments guarantees legal protection. The protected elements (logis, towers, chapel, presbytery) offer a rare glimpse of hybrid architecture, between medieval heritage and modern modifications, characteristic of Cistercian or obazinian barns in southwestern France.
