Origin and history
The Priory Saint-Martin-des-Champs, located in Bourges, is a historical monument whose church is the only remaining element. This priory depended on the abbey of Saint-Martin-de-Marmoutiers, near Tours, and was united at the Petit Séminaire de Bourges in 1742. It represents the only Romanesque building still partially preserved, although its chapel was transformed into a barn in the 19th century.
The farmed chevron frame, probably dated from the early 15th century, is a rare architectural testimony in Bourges. It illustrates the evolution of medieval construction techniques in the region. The former chapel, classified by decree of 22 March 1991, is now owned by a private company.
The priory, although partially altered, preserves traces of its religious and architectural past. Its history reflects the links between the Tourangelle Abbeys and the Berry, as well as the transformations of religious buildings over the centuries, including their reassignment to agricultural or secular uses.
