Origin and history

The Priory Saint-Hilaire, also known as the Priory of Commagny, is a medieval religious building located in the hamlet of Commagny, in Moulins-Engilbert (Nièvre). Founded in the early 12th century, it served as a parish and commune capital until the 19th century. His history was marked by his progressive connection to Moulins-Engilbert, first in 1794 during the Revolution, and finally in 1841 after being sold as a national good.

The architectural ensemble includes a Prioral church dedicated to St. Lawrence, with a side chapel dedicated to Saints Gervais and Protais. The north arm of the transept is extended by a medieval convent building housing the residence of the prior. Close by, a still active cemetery borders the church gate, while a second building, located to the south, has lost its original function.

Commagny's first written record dates back to 1161, in a letter from the bishop of Nevers, which traced the churches dependent on Saint Martin's Abbey in Autun. This mention was confirmed in 1164 by a papal bubble of Alexander III, then the priory appeared in acts until the 15th century, when it housed a school for the children of local notables. After the Revolution, it was sold as a national property between 1790 and XII.

Ranked a two-stage historical monument (registration of the ensemble in 1927, classification of the church in 1930), the priory illustrates Burgundy's rural religious architecture. Its history also reflects the institutional upheavals, from its medieval parish role to its modern integration in the commune of Moulins-Engilbert.

The sources mention some notable priors, such as Jean de Salazar (early 16th century), who became abbot of Saint-Martin d'Autun, or Nicolas de Chandon (1616), also Prior of Saint-Honoré-les-Bains. These figures highlight the links between Commagny and other religious establishments in the region, such as the Abbeys of Autun or Bellevaux.
