Origin and history
The Priory of Goult is a former priory located in La Lande-de-Goult, Orne department, Normandy. Founded in the 12th century, it was originally attached to the Lonlay Abbey, as evidenced by historical confirmation. This religious monument, typical of Norman architecture of the time, preserves remarkable Romanesque elements, including six capitals and their columns, dated from the early twelfth century and classified as historical monuments in 1953. These elements, characteristic of Norman art, adorn the chapel gate, later rebuilt.
The present chapel, rebuilt in the 18th century, incorporates the original Romanesque portal on its western façade. This redesign illustrates the architectural evolutions of the priory over the centuries. The prioral home, on the other hand, reflects the architecture of the 16th century, a period in which the priory probably undergoes major transformations. The facades and roofs of this house, as well as the wall paintings of the chapel, have been protected since 1989, highlighting the heritage richness of the site.
The Priory of Goult has been listed as a historical monument since 1928, recognizing its historical and architectural value. Today, the site is managed by a regional public institution, although its access to the public (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified in the available sources. Its history, marked by reconstructions and reuses of ancient elements, bears witness to the evolution of religious and architectural practices in Normandy over centuries.
