The Priory of Montempuis is a historical monument located in the commune of Saint-Parize-en-Viry, in the department of Nièvre (58), in the region Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Built during the 1st quarter of the 16th century, this priory is representative of the religious architecture of this period, marked by the transition between the late Gothic and the early Renaissance.
The chapel of the priory, located on the Cadastre A 394, was inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 15 May 1974. In the sixteenth century, priories played a central role in the religious and social life of the Burgundy countryside. They often served as places of prayer, reception for pilgrims or travellers, and sometimes as local economic centres, managing land or agricultural resources. The region, then under the influence of the Duchy of Burgundy, was marked by a strong feudal and ecclesiastical organization, where religious buildings such as Montempuis structured the landscape and community life.
