Origin and history

The Priory of Notre-Dame de Relay, located in Pont-de-Ruan (Indre-et-Loire), was founded around 1100 under the authority of the Order of Fontevraud. This priory, typical of medieval religious establishments, was organized around a cloister, some of which still remains today. The remains include a long building from the 16th century to the west of the cloister, once home to the monks' cells, as well as a cylindrical escape from the same period. These structures, partially transformed into houses and barns, bear witness to the architectural and functional evolution of the site over the centuries.

The entrance gate, dating from the beginning of the 17th century, is distinguished by its classic style: an arcade in full hanger framed with doric pilasters with prominent bosses, surmounted by a circular cut pediment decorated with a cartridge. This portal, as well as the former Priorial Church, was inscribed in historical monuments as early as 1930. In 2022, all the remains of the priory, including the floors and unbuilt elements, were protected by a new decree, followed in 2024 by the complete classification of the Church of Notre-Dame. These measures highlight the heritage value of a site marked by nearly a thousand years of religious and architectural history.

The Priorial Church, the spiritual heart of the Priory, and the Conventual buildings reflect the different phases of construction and adaptation of the site. Although some parts have disappeared, such as the north wing of the kitchens, the preserved elements offer a glimpse of monastic life between the Middle Ages and modern times. The priory of Relay thus illustrates the role of the casturist establishments in Touraine, while bearing the traces of the transformations after the Revolution, when religious buildings were often converted to agricultural or residential uses.
