Origin and history
The Priory Saint-Étienne de Choisy-au-Bac is a 13th century religious monument located in the commune of Choisy-au-Bac, in the department of Oise (60). This site, also known as the Chapel of the Three Oaks, is located on a hill overlooking the village, on the edge of the Laigue forest. Its location offers a remarkable view of the surroundings, while being integrated into a wooded and preserved environment.
The chapel has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1948, with specific protection for the remains of the building. Although the information available on its detailed history is limited, its inscription bears witness to its heritage importance. The location, reported as "a priori satisfactory" (note 6/10), identifies its approximate address at 209 Rue Victor Hugo in Choisy-au-Bac.
In the 13th century, chapels and priories played a central role in the religious and social life of rural communities. They served as places of worship, but also as spiritual and cultural landmarks for the inhabitants. In a region such as Picardie (now Hauts-de-France), with a strong agricultural and forestry presence, these buildings were often linked to local seigneuries or religious orders, helping to structure the territory and collective life.
