Origin and history

The Protestant temple of Puylaurens, built in the seventeenth century, is part of a turbulent history linked to the wars of Religion. The first building, joined to the Catholic church, was replaced in 1754 by a hall, before the present temple was relegated west of the city, rue Foulinou, on the edge of the old ramparts. This displacement reflects the religious tensions of the time, where Protestants were often marginalized in urban space.

Located between Toulouse and Castres, Puylaurens played a strategic role as Protestant stronghold in the 16th and 17th centuries. The city even housed the Protestant Theology Academy, driven from Montauban, making it a major intellectual and religious home. This context explains the symbolic importance of the temple, now classified as a Historical Monument since 2015, and managed by a local association.

The current building, located at 26 Foulinou Street, illustrates the adaptation of Protestant communities after the persecutions. Its listing in the Historical Monuments Inventory highlights its heritage value, linked to both its architecture and its history. The approximate location (accurate 5/10) and the GPS coordinates available allow it to be located in the urban fabric of Puylaurens, in the Tarn (Occitanie).
