Origin and history
Billom's monument, consisting of a public measure, a public weight house and a bridge, dates back to the 15th century. This historic site is distinguished by its small bridge with an elliptical arch, with a slightly curved apron. A notable feature is the deck parapet, where a long lava slab is dug from three circular bushels of different capacities. These containers, equipped with metal side openings and sliding hatches, were used to measure and distribute grain in bags suspended by iron hooks.
The Public Weight House, adjacent to the bridge, features a corbelled façade over the river. This wooden panel structure, now covered with a crepi, illustrates medieval construction techniques. Together, including the public stone measure built into the bridge, is evidence of the importance of trade and the regulation of weights and measures in Billom during the 15th century.
Ranked and listed as a Historical Monument by order of 16 December 1982, this site includes several protected elements: the public stone measure of the Market Bridge, the bridge itself, as well as the facades and roofs of the old House of Public Weight. These protections underline the heritage value of this complex, shared between communal and private property.
