Gate of fortifications (former): inscription by decree of 13 April 1933

Origin and history

La Porte des Fortifications de Travailan is a 12th century medieval monument in the department of Vaucluse, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This vestige, inscribed as a Historical Monument by order of 13 April 1933, illustrates the defensive architecture of the period in Provence. Its location, at 1261 Route de Cairanne, marks the former enclosure of the village, although the accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 6/10).

Medieval fortifications such as that of Laborlan played a key role in the protection of provencal villages in the 12th century. They were used to control access, to protect against local invasions or conflicts, and to assert seigneurial or communal power. In this region, marked by trade and feudal tensions, these works were often integrated into a wider defence network, including castles and watchtowers.

The monument, now partially preserved, is the subject of a sheet in the Merimée base under the code Insee 84134 (Comune of Laborlan). No additional information is available regarding its current use (visit, rental) or its detailed conservation status. Sources are limited to Monumentum data and internal archives, without reference to restorations or specific historical events related to this door.
