Porte de Ville so-called Porte de l'Horloge : inscription by order of 7 August 1926

Key figures

Jean Ier de Chalon - Founding Lord Created Nozeroy and its fortifications in 1262.
Jean III de Chalon-Arlay - Prince Builder Founded the Collège Saint-Antoine in the 15th century.
Gilbert Cousin - Free-County Humanist Described Nozeroy as a "pearl.".

Origin and history

The Porte de l'Horloge de Nozoy is part of the history of this fortified city founded in 1262 by John I of Chalon. This Burgundy lord chose a strategic site near the salt road, connecting Burgundy with Switzerland, to establish a fortress and an administrative city. The city, perched on a hill, became a major political and commercial centre for the House of Chalon-Arlay, princes of Orange.

The gate, a key element of the ramparts, symbolizes Nozeroy's defensive importance in the Middle Ages. The city, described as a "pearl of the Jura" by humanist Gilbert Cousin in the 16th century, also housed a luxurious princely palace (now in ruins) and the collegiate Saint-Antoine. These monuments bear witness to the power of the Chalon, who made Nozeroy their privileged residence until the 15th century.

Restored in 2008, the Door of the Clock is today one of the last intact remains of medieval fortifications. It is part of a preserved heritage complex, including the ruins of the castle, the partial ramparts, and other gates like Nods. These elements, associated with the collegiate body, are worth the label "Cité de Charactere de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté" to Nozeroy.

The monument also illustrates the local architecture, characterized by the use of the yellow stone of Molpré, typical of the Jura. His inscription in the Monuments Historiques in 1926 underlined his role in the urban history of Franche-Comté, between Burgundy influence and Alpine exchanges. The gate remains a symbol of Nozeroy's golden age, when the city competed with the large cities of the region.

Today, the Door of the Clock serves as a framework for cultural events, such as the annual celebration "L'Assaut des Remparts", which celebrates every summer the medieval heritage of the city. Its central location on Place Henri-IV makes it a landmark for visitors exploring the heritage of this ancient capital of the princes of Chalon.
