Origin and history
The fortified gate of Fourques is a vestige of the medieval fortifications of the village, dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Located near the town hall, on the southern edge of the former fortified perimeter, it overlooks the Rue du Château. Today, it is one of the few preserved elements of the original enclosure, with some portions of walls.
The construction of this gate, probably completed in the late 13th century, met the village's defence needs. It is characterized by a robust architecture, with two exterior arches separated by a mâchicoulis, remains of a round road in the upper part, and a niche located behind the entrance. These details reflect the fortification techniques common at that time in the region.
Classified as historical monuments since 8 October 1984, the fortified gate of Fourques illustrates the strategic importance of the villages of the Eastern Pyrenees in the Middle Ages. Its state of conservation makes it possible to study medieval construction methods, especially the use of pebbles arranged in ears, typical of some local fortifications. No information is available on any conflicts or characters related to its construction or use.
The monument is part of a regional context marked by a social organization centred around habitat protection. Fortifications, like Fourques, played a key role in defending against external threats, while structuring community life. Their gradual decline from the fourteenth century coincided with the evolution of military techniques and the reduction of the risk of local invasions.
