Origin and history
Chagny Point 2 is a railway building located near Chagny Station, in the department of Saône-et-Loire. Built by the Compagnie des chemins de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM), it illustrates the typical architecture of the inter-war stations. This monument, although disused after computerization of the systems, was preserved for its historical character and its connection to the local railway past.
The line from Nevers to Chagny, operated by the PLM in 1861, marked the railway development of the area, with the opening of the Montchanin-Chagny section on 22 September 1861. Chagny station became an important node with the declaration of public utility in 1880 from the line to Dole-Ville. These infrastructures have played a key role in regional trade and freight transport.
Threatened by destruction in the 2010s by the SNCF, the No.2 switch post was finally saved thanks to the intervention of local actors, including the president of the tourist office. Its inscription in the historic monuments on 29 May 2020, together with the Rotunda of Autun, recognizes its heritage value as a witness to Burgundy railway history and PLM engineering.
Located from Rémigny to Chagny, the building has been fully protected since 2020, including its cadastral plot. Its architecture and location recall the strategic importance of switch stations in the management of rail traffic before the digital age. Today, it is a historic landmark for the commune and the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region.
