Origin and history
Puyfol Castle, located in Cindre in the Allier department, is a building whose origins date back to at least the 15th century. It was rebuilt at that time after being taken and taken over during the Hundred Years' War, especially in 1365. This castle presents an architecture marked by two distinct levels, with defensive elements such as a dungeon, a staircase turret and two round towers. These ancient parts testify to its past strategic role.
In the 17th century, the castle was enlarged, adding more recent architectural elements to the medieval structure. Among the notable remains are a large vaulted room on the first floor, with pronounced ribs and an imposing stone fireplace. The screw staircase, with its large stone steps, is another remarkable element, complemented by a corner turret resting on an adorned lamp-end.
Puyfol Castle was classified as historic monuments on 13 February 1925, recognizing its heritage value. The current buildings are organized around a rectangular courtyard, illustrating the successive transformations of the site. Available sources, such as the Mérimée and Monumentum base, confirm its historical and architectural importance in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
