Origin and history
The castle of Puymaret, located on a spur overlooking the plain of Brive-la-Gaillarde, occupies a strategic position at the outlet of the Corrèze. Gallo-Roman occupation was recorded. Among the vestiges of the 13th century remain a square doratory tower, a central building housing a cistern, a tower of staircase in view, as well as remains of chapel. These elements testify to its defensive and religious importance in the Middle Ages.
Fired in 1793, probably in the revolutionary context, the castle was rebuilt in the 19th century by integrating medieval structures spared. A large building body is then built in the troubadour style, characteristic of the romantic restorations of the century. After a new fire in 1984, the south and east wings were renovated, preserving its composite architectural heritage.
Ranked a historic monument since 4 May 2000, the castle of Puymaret includes in its protection all the buildings as well as their plated ground (park AK 3). Its history reflects the political and aesthetic transformations of France, from medieval conflicts to post-revolutionary restorations, to contemporary adaptations after disaster.
