Four monoliths, in the hamlet of Chapey (Box C 487): inscription by order of 27 February 1953

Origin and history

Les Pierres aux Saints form a set of four funeral steles in the hamlet of Chapey, on the commune of Broye, Saône-et-Loire. These monoliths date from the Gallo-Roman era, during which the region was marked by a fusion of Celtic and Roman cultures. Their presence suggests the importance of local funeral practices at that time.

Classified as historical monuments by decree of 27 February 1953, these stones illustrate the ancient heritage of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. Their precise location, at 4 Rue des Pierres aux Saints, allows visitors to discover a rare vestige of this period. No additional information on their sponsor or exact use is available from current sources.
