Façade sur rue and corresponding roofing slope (Box B 249): inscription by order of 22 May 1956
Origin and history
The house at 6 Rue Saint-Mathieu in Quimper is an example of 17th-century civil architecture, characteristic of Breton heritage. Its facade in wooden panels and crepasing on lattis illustrates the traditional construction techniques of the period, still visible in the historical center of the city. This type of house, often modest but neat, reflects the urban planning of Breton cities under the Old Regime, where wooden and torchi dwellings coexisted with stone buildings.
Classified as a Historic Monument, this house is one of the protected elements of the old quarter of Quimper. The inscription by decree of 22 May 1956 specifically concerns his facade on street and the corresponding roof slope, emphasizing his heritage interest. Although the archives do not mention any characters or events related to this place, its state of conservation and architectural style make it a valuable witness to Breton urban life in the 17th century.
The location of the house, in a historical area of Quimper, suggests that it was probably inhabited by local artisans, merchants or bourgeois families. At that time, Quimper was an important economic and religious centre in Cornwall, known for its faience production and its role as a commercial hub. Wood-paned houses, such as this one, served both as a dwelling and sometimes as a workshop or as a scoop, thus participating in the daily life of the city.
