Origin and history

Rantzwiller is an archaeological site located on the territory of the commune of Rantzwiller in the Grand Est region. This type of structure, characteristic of the Middle Ages, generally served as a defence point or seigneurial residence. The castral mots were often surrounded by ditches and surmounted by a wooden or stone tower, although the current physical traces do not always allow to specify their exact configuration.

In the regional historical context, castral mots such as Rantzwiller were part of a network of local fortifications, reflecting the feudal organization of the time. These buildings played a key role in the protection of agricultural lands and roads, while symbolizing the power of local lords. Their presence also demonstrated a structured human occupation, linked to the dominant agricultural and craft activities in rural areas.
