Key figures

Maréchal Soult - Military Commander Defended the border in 1813.

Origin and history

Kurutchamendy's dread, located in Uhart-Cize in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, is a military structure built in the early 19th century. This monument bears witness to the fortifications erected to defend the French-Spanish border, in a context of tensions linked to the Napoleonic wars. Its architecture reflects the defence techniques of the time, adapted to the mountainous reliefs of the region.

In 1813, the dread was involved in the operations of Marshal Soult to counter the advance of the British army. This site, now classified as a Historical Monument, illustrates the military strategies deployed during the conflicts that marked the end of the Napoleonic Empire. Its registration in 1992 underscores its heritage and historical importance.

The location of the dread, near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, makes it a strategic point on the Napoleon road. Although its geographical accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10), it remains a tangible vestige of the border struggles of the early nineteenth century. Owned by the commune, it offers an overview of geopolitical issues of the time.
