Origin and history

The dread of the Castellas de Sète is a defense tower built in the 4th quarter of the 16th century. This monument, classified as a Historical Monument, consists of three floors with distinct functions. The ground floor probably housed a food store, while the first floor, accessible by a removable ladder, was illuminated by murderers and covered with a cradle vault. This system was used to control access to the upper floor, a defensive platform equipped with mâchicoulis scaffolds, murderers and a central bezel.

The architecture of dread suggests a vocation both defensive and observation. The murderers, placed on each side and in the corners, indicate a design adapted to the firearms of the time. The mobile ladder, once removed, strengthened security by limiting access to the upper floors. Some historians hypothesize that this tower would have replaced older watch posts, reflecting a pre-existing strategic occupation on this coastal site.

The Castellas dread was included in the inventory of Historical Monuments by decree of 6 November 1939. Today, it belongs to a private company and is located on the promenade of the Lido in Sète. Its state of conservation and access to the public (visits, rental, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources. The GPS location places the monument at the approximate address of 9202 Promenade du Lido, in the department of the Hérault (Occitanie region).
