Origin and history

The Regional Establishment of Material (ERM) of Gresswiller, now known as ETAMAT, finds its origins in the arsenal and the artillery park created under Napoleon I in Strasbourg, in the district of Esplanade. This initial site, dedicated to the repair and maintenance of military equipment, was transformed in 1923 into a regional repair and maintenance park in Strasbourg. The upheavals of the Second World War marked his evolution: in 1944 he became the main establishment of the Materiel Service-Annex of Metz, then in 1945, the General Establishment of Materiel in Strasbourg, before being renamed Regional Materiel Establishment (ERM) on 1 June 1946.

The construction of the current Gresswiller site began in 1963, for an official inauguration on 1 March 1965. During this transfer, carved elements from the façade of the main building of the former Strasbourg artillery park (Arsenal Street) were moved to the entrance of the Chassepot district in Gresswiller. These sculptures, architectural witnesses of the 19th century, have been inscribed in historical monuments since October 12, 1929. They are the only visible vestige of the original arsenal, of which only the management remains today, transformed into housing.

On 1 January 1994, he became the Establishment of the Gresswiller Equipment (ETAMAT), and on 1 July 1999 he was joined as a detachment of the 6th Materiel Regiment (6th RMAT). The site, still militarily active, is not accessible to the public due to its secure enclosure. Its sculpted heritage, although protected, remains unknown due to this restriction of access.

Located at 16a rue du Maréchal Leclerc in Gresswiller (Bas-Rhin), the establishment is part of the Alsatian industrial and military landscape. Its history reflects France's territorial and strategic recompositions, particularly in Alsace, a region marked by Franco-German conflicts. The sculpted elements, symbols of this memory, recall the Napoleonic heritage and the successive adaptations of military infrastructure to the needs of National Defence.
