Origin and history
The walls of Peruges form a double elliptical enclosure surrounding the medieval city, built in the 15th century. There are two main doors: the gate from En-Haut to the northwest and the gate from En-Bas to the southeast. The Rue des Rondes runs along the interior of these fortifications, while the fortified church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine partially integrates the ramparts into its structure.
The majority of the ramparts, including the adjacent part of Nicolas House, were classified as historical monuments in 1921 and 1924. Other sections, such as the wall adjacent to the former hospital, were registered in 1929. These fortifications illustrate the strategic importance of Peruges, a medieval village preserved, whose urban planning and defences reflect the military and community concerns of the time.
The ramparts are located precisely on Rue des Rondes, in the department of Ain (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Their state of conservation and their integration into the urban fabric make it a remarkable example of fortified heritage. The protection of historic monuments underscores their architectural value and their role in local history.
