Vestiges of the wall (Box BR 241, 576) : inscription by order of 9 July 1986

Origin and history

The medieval rampart of the islet Villatte is a vestige of the fortifications of the city of Issoudun, located in the department of Indre, in the region Centre-Val de Loire. Dating from the Middle Ages, these remains have been listed as Historic Monument since 1986, specifically protecting the remains of the wall still visible today. Their location, although documented (6 Impasse du Four), remains approximate according to the available sources, with cartographic accuracy considered poor (level 5/10).

These urban fortifications are part of a medieval context where ramparts played a key role in protecting cities from invasions and local conflicts. In Issoudun, as in many cities in the region, these defensive structures also reflected the social and economic organization of the period, marking the boundary between the protected urban space and the surrounding rural areas. The current, though partial, remains provide an overview of medieval military architecture and its strategic importance to local communities.
