Origin and history

The ramparts of Amance are a complex of fortifications located in the commune of Amance, in Haute-Saône, Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Their construction dates back to the 14th century, a period marked by the strategic importance of defensive systems to protect cities and villages from frequent conflicts, especially during the Hundred Years War. These ramparts bear witness to the medieval military architecture typical of this period, designed to resist the assaults and ensure the safety of the local inhabitants.

In the 14th century, in regions such as Franche-Comté, fortifications played a central role in social and economic organization. They served not only as protection against invasions or looting, but also as a symbol of seigneurial or communal power. The ramparts of Amance, like other defensive works in the region, reflect this dual function: military and political.

Their classification as historic monuments in 1971 underscores their heritage value and preservation for future generations.
