Origin and history

The ramparts of Nevers, located between the Tower of Le Havre and the Loire, are part of the fortified enclosure built in the 15th century to protect the Notre Dame Abbey and its estate. This fortification, consolidated during the Hundred Years' War, included towers (such as the Goguin Tower or the Saint-Réverian Tower) and gates (Porte du Croux), reinforced by a marshy ditch fed by the brook of the Passière. The ramparts lost their defensive role in the 16th century, becoming a disputed space between the Duke and the inhabitants, who installed gardens there. After the siege of 1617 and the ordinances of Louis XIV, their abandonment transformed them into stone quarries, but some were preserved thanks to wetlands difficult to urbanize.

In the 19th century, the remains were integrated into adjacent buildings, and the abbey was sold in lots to private individuals after the Revolution. In 1960, the town of Nevers bought the land to create the Promenade des Remparts, built between 1964 and 1965 by engineer Besnard. The brook of La Passière was channeled, and a landscaped garden relied the Porte du Croux to the Loire. The tower of Le Havre, now open, played a key role in water retention to feed the mills below.

The architecture of the ramparts reveals defensive elements such as blocked arches, a room of weapons, and towers (Saint-Réverian, Goguin). The current walk also offers access to the abbey garden, reconstituted in 1981 to evoke medieval monastic gardens, with medicinal and aromatic plants. The Saint-Réverian spring, formerly integrated with the wall, and the "fertile canton" recall the agricultural and religious history of the site. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1944, these ramparts reflect the urban and landscape evolution of Nevers.
