Gate of the ramparts known as Porte d'Avignon : inscription by decree of 20 June 1952

Origin and history

The ramparts of Monteux, located in the commune of Monteux (Vaucluse), are part of the historical heritage of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Among their remarkable elements, the Gate of the Walls, known as the Porte d'Avignon, was listed as a Historical Monument by ministerial decree on 20 June 1952. This gate is an emblematic vestige of the city's fortified enclosure, now communal property.

The location of the ramparts is specified in the Merimée base under the address of 26 Boulevard Trewey, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note of 5/10). No additional information is available on their exact origin, construction or precise historical role. Their presence, however, demonstrates the strategic importance of Monteux in the past, as evidenced by the preserved fortifications.

Available data from Monumentum and the internal archives do not mention architects or sponsors of the ramparts. Their current status and accessibility (visit, rental) are also not documented. Only the legal protection of the Avignon Gate in 1952 offers a concrete chronological landmark for this monument.
